Am Samstag, den 18.04.2026, wird Prof. Dr. Maxixmilian Dehling einen reich bebilderten Vortrag über seine Expeditionen in Ruanda halten.

Das kleine zentralafrikanische Land Ruanda ist der am dichtesten besiedelte Flächenstaat Afrikas. Trotz der geringen Landesgröße und dem großen Druck auf die verbliebenen natürlichen Flächen durch die stetig wachsende Bevölkerung weist Ruanda eine enorme Artenvielfalt auf, die besonders durch die zahlreichen verschiedenen Habitatformen im Land begünstigt wird. Während der trockenere Osten des Landes von Savanne geprägt ist, findet man im Nordwesten und Südwesten des Landes noch große zusammenhängende Bergregenwaldgebiete im Bereich des zentralafrikanischen Grabenbruchs. Hier kommen neben den berühmten Berggorillas viele weitere regional endemische Tierarten, darunter auch Amphibien und Reptilien, vor. Im Vortrag werden die Hauptlebensräume in Ruanda vorgestellt mit Schwerpunkt auf der Herpetofauna, aber auch viele andere charakteristische oder besondere Tierarten werden gezeigt.

On Saturday, 18 April 2026, Prof. Dr Maximilian Dehling will give a richly illustrated talk about his expeditions in Rwanda.

The small Central African country of Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa. Despite its small size and the heavy pressure on its remaining natural areas from a steadily growing population, Rwanda boasts an enormous biodiversity, which is particularly favoured by the country’s numerous different habitat types. Whilst the drier eastern part of the country is characterised by savannah, large contiguous areas of mountain rainforest can still be found in the north-west and south-west of the country, within the Central African Rift Valley. In addition to the famous mountain gorillas, many other regionally endemic animal species, including amphibians and reptiles, are found here. The talk will introduce the main habitats in Rwanda, focusing on the herpetofauna, but will also highlight many other characteristic or distinctive animal species.
